Join the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten Initiative!
Read any book, (yes repeats count!), to your newborn, infant, or toddler and work towards the goal of 1,000 books read before kindergarten!
Why Join?
Reading to your child before kindergarten helps build language skills and introduces them to a broad range of subjects. This program was designed to promote reading to newborns, infants, and toddlers while encouraging the parent/child bond. It is a simple, innovative, yet fun approach to establishing strong, early literacy skills and an awesome way to kick-off their love of learning.
Children will earn brag tags, prizes, and lots of praise from the librarians along their way to 1,000 books. Once the goal is met, they will receive a special reading buddy (stuffed animal) to encourage them to keep reading.
Who Has the Time?
YOU DO! By reading just one book a night, you can complete the challenge in under 3 years. And if you want to complete it in 1? You totally can! Read 20 books per week, that’s only 3 books per day, and you will wrap up the year with 1,040 books read.
How to Participate:
Fill out an application at the library or download one here. Once your application has been reviewed, you will receive your introductory tote bag to keep your books organized and have your child’s picture taken to add to our Participation Wall. (You can also choose to just add their name)
Keep track of the books by marking off or coloring in one animal on your reading log for each book read. Track of your favorites at the bottom of the log.
For each reading log completed (100 books), bring it into the library to receive a brag tag, a milestone prize and to pick up your next log (or print one below).
Once you reach 1,000 books, visit the library to receive your Certificate of Achievement and your new reading buddy!
